Health Insurance and pre-existing conditions

I have a pre-existing condition covered by the health insurance through my current employer, but I am changing jobs. Will I have a problem changing insurance carriers?

COBRA

Health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions is one of the biggest worries people have when changing jobs. Thanks to The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), people can rest assured that their health insurance coverage will continue for themselves and covered dependents.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events. Qualified individuals may be required to pay the entire health insurance premium for coverage up to 102 percent of the cost to the plan.
COBRA generally requires that group health plans sponsored by employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health insurance coverage (called continuation coverage) in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end.
COBRA outlines how employees and family members may elect continuation coverage. It also requires employers and plans to provide notice.

The greatest benefit of COBRA; is not having to worry about pre-existing conditions. While going through the waiting period of the new employer, you continue to go the providers you've been going to. Usually you can keep the COBRA up to 18 months, although this is the normal time allowed, there are other qualifying events for longer coverage periods, such as divorce or death, these events allow up to 36 months of COBRA protection.
COBRA can be confusing to say the least, not all employer's have to offer it, not all employers notify you timely or correctly. If you have pre-existing conditions, if you're taking prescription medication, if one of your dependents has a pre-existing condition, selecting COBRA should be a decision you make quickly. Although you have 60 days to elect COBRA from the date you are notified, trust me, that amount of time will fly by! Some COBRA administrators, unless you activate your COBRA immediately, can make you pay quarterly for COBRA.

This can be such a financial strain that you may not be able to afford COBRA. Remember the employer was paying a portion of the premium for your health benefits, now you get a bill for the entire premium amount plus an additional 2% for administration. Yes I know, envelopes, stamps, and the amount of time it takes to lick a stamp, is very expensive. It's not unusual for a single premium in south Florida to average $250, that's correct add $5 to have it sent to you! With all the frustrations you have to deal with, not having a job, not having an income, and not knowing what to do, is there anyone you can turn to, too help with this crisis? Only a licensed professional agent at Oxonia Health Insurance Group can help you with making a decision. Because health insurance is a federal regulated industry, you can count on us to help you make the right decision. The majority of the time if you and/or your family have pre-existing conditions, we are going to recommend you taking the COBRA option. COBRA is the right answer if you have pre-existing conditions. The last thing you need to worry about is whether your condition will be covered by the new employer. If you go more than 62 days without continuous creditable coverage, you might have to start the new employer's health insurance plan subject to pre-existing limitations. Our agents will always do what is ethical for each situation. Oxonia agents will only recommend another type of product, only if you are no longer eligible for you COBRA policy. Then, if your pre-existing conditions are not serious enough to keep you from getting a major medical PPO plan, we will offer an Intelicare product, which most carriers consider as creditable coverage.

Once again, don't delay. Don't wait to the last minute, call us, and/or go on line to chat with our resident expert, Oxonia Insurance Group will help you with all your health insurance needs and concerns. Don't put yourself in a position that calls for desperate actions; give your self time and alternatives to select the best option for coverage. Don't let COBRA turn into a creature that can "bite" you in the pocket and cost you thousands of dollars for making a wrong decision!
